The Highland High School Student Government elections are being held on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Highland High School campus. Students have been campaigning hard from the very start; May 16. Students have hung posters, made flyers, spoke about what they plan on doing for their school, and asking for votes all week. The candidates will give their speeches on Friday, May 20 in the Highland High School Gymnasium.
On Tuesday, May 10, students that planned on running for a Student Council title must have attended the Campaign Guidelines meeting. The meeting informed the candidates about how they were supposed to go about with their candidacy. A guidelines sheet was passed out to all that were present. Suggestions about a consistent theme, being positive, and being neat were listed on the handout.
Students were also given the Highland Student Council Constitution. The Highland Student Council Constitution consisit of the purpose of the student council, the membership guidelines, the officer titles, nomination and election information, the duties of the officers, the removal from office and vacancies, class and club information, chartering clubs, the eligibility of office, and the installing in the student council. All members of the student council must abide by the constitution.
All students that are running for office must write and present their speech in front of the whole Highland High School. Speeches will be first hour in the high school gymnasium on Friday, May 20. Voting will follow the speeches during second hour of the day.
The candidates this year are;
President- Wolf Mays & Darian Stewart
Vice President- Hannah Rikard- Unopposed
Secretary- Charlie Fuller- Unopposed
Treasurer- E.B. Barnes & Jordan Haley
12th Grade Representative- Taylor Clem, Jarrert Powell, & Jessica Walker. 11th Grade Representative- Zach “Stumpy” Yates, Bryce Renihan, & Ethan Hoppe.
10th Grade Representative- Breanna Murphy & Shawn Young.
9th Grade Representative- Johny Kaladzhyan- Unopposed -A total of 15 candidates.
Students interested in running for a position on the Student Council must have a Grade Point Average of at least a 2.5 or higher to be eligible to run; they must also be approved by the principal, and must be approved by a student council sponsor.
The Student Council sponsors for the school year of 2011-2012 are Missy Fuller and Roger Nicholson. They have been the Student Council sponsors for three years now.
